Congratulations must go to Pam Smith and her team for winning the
St John's Ladies Tournament on Thursday.
Also to Rae Risk and her team for being runner-up. This day was a single entry day, and teams were made up of players from different clubs. This was an interesting concept, because you didn't know who you were going to play with. A very enjoyable and social day.

The Men's A-Grade final

Mark McDonald is the new men’s singles champion at Mortlake Bowls Club after an exciting victory over a gallant Bryan Parker. The match was played in very warm conditions and appeared to be headed for a comfortable McDonald victory after a combination of good drawing and deft conversions saw Mark lead by 10 shots after 10 ends, then push on to lead 24-10 after 20 ends in the first to 25 final. Bryan , however, refused to give in and continued to draw close to the kitty. Multiple counts on ends 21 to 23 saw the score 24 -17 and the spectators starting to murmur about an unlikely comeback victory. The murmurs turned to a crescendo as Bran reeled off the next 5 ends to have the score at 24-23. The pressure was palpable as Bryan drew 2 very close bowls to hold match lie before Mark rested inside them both to finally clinch an exciting victory.

The Men's A-Grade Semi final

The final of the A grade singles will be played this Saturday morning(Dec 31) at 9 am between Mark McDonald, in his first year at Mortlake after moving from Hastings, and Bryan Parker, who has been champion 3 times before in 1999-00,2005-06 and 2009-10.Bryan qualified for the final by defeating last year’s winner George Draffen 25-19. Bryan was able to open up a lead early in the match and withstand a late challenge. The final should be a good contest between two worthy finalists.

As all of Mortlake’s pennant teams enjoy the Christmas break it is a good time to update ladder positions. In Division 1 of Saturday pennant Mortlake sits 9th with 67 pts,  which is 32 pts ahead of 10th and only 7 pts behind 6th.
